The youngster started in midfielder for the injury ravaged Gunners on Saturday and impressed Unai Emery enough to play the full ninety minutes.
Arsenal took an early lead through Alex Iwobi at the John Smith’s Stadium before Alexandre Lacazette doubled their advantage going into the break.
A Sead Kolasinac own goal in stoppage time resulted in the final score looking more precarious than it should have, but in reality the Gunners were good value for their fifteenth win of the season.
After the match Arsenal fans took to social media to critique their players’ performances, as is case with fans of most teams these days.
And some opted to criticise Maitland-Niles, with one writing: “You lose the ball carelessly be careful when going forward especially when you play against tight teams that don’t give space away. Anyway keep fighting.”
Another added: “Please work on not giving up the ball. Otherwise, great game!” And a third wrote: “You are too lazy for Arsenal.”
Most players understandably ignore these comments aimed at them on Instagram, but Maitland-Niles decided to respond to a handful of them.
One of his responses read: “Sorry, I’ll take it into consideration,” another: “Thanks I’ll try better brother,” and a final one: “Sorry bro, I’ll do better next game.”
In fact, all of the youngster’s responses were polite and mature and have been roundly praised by other Arsenal fans who follow him on Instagram.
