Mickey Thomas posts emotional message to fans as he starts cancer treatment

Former Manchester United and Wales legend Mickey Thomas has posted an emotional message to fans and vowed to beat cancer “in 90 minutes”.

The 64-year-old started treatment on Monday after being diagnosed with stomach cancer shortly before Christmas.

The 51-cap international was a huge fans’ favourite during his time at Old Trafford and says he has been “blown away” by the messages of support he has received from supporters.

His popularity has become apparent by a GoFundMe page setup by fans to offer financial assistance as he undergoes treatment which has already raised over £14,000.

The winger, who was a club legend at local club Wrexham during two stints with the club and also played for Chelsea , Stoke, Everton and West Brom amongst others, took to Twitter to address fans.

Thomas has vowed to beat cancer as he starts treatment

“Today is the day I start my treatment and my fight back against the big C,” Thomas said.

“I aim to beat this in 90 minutes with no extra time and penalties.

“I have been blown away by the love, kindness and support I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart.”

Thomas, who is set to undergo chemo and radiotherapy treatment before an operation to remove the tumour then a further course of chemotherapy, previously admitted he was “scared” by the diagnosis.

He received a number of high-profile responses to his tweet, with Manchester United star Ashley Young amongst those to reply sending well-wishes.
